The Gerson Program Saved My Mother's Life

I am posting this blog in honor of my Mother who passed away 2 years ago. It would have been her 85th birthday.

In 1978 while I was still in high school my mother developed breast cancer.  I had no idea what detoxification was or how it worked.  The nutritional program that she decided to use to help her overcome her condition was the Gerson Program.  The main strategy of this program is detoxification which treats existing conditions and can prevent disease.  My mother taught me how to do a coffee enema when i was a freshmen in college.  I bet Sigmund Freud would have a field day with that one. Now in my 18th year of private practice detoxification as a healing strategy is the most important part of my practice.

Top Ten Ways To Clear and Strengthen Your Digestive System


Repair Your Digestive System

  1. 1. Eliminate foods that are possible allergens which may have a negative impact on the digestive system.  For example, reduce gluten, highly processed foods, foods that contain perseverates and additives, dairy and certain seeds and nuts.  (see the anti-inflammatory diet)

  1. Stop taking over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and antacids.  These two drugs are contributing factions to the many symptoms associated with poor digestion.  If you are taking over the counter pain medications use fish oil and turmeric instead - they both have natural anti-inflammatory properties without side-effects.

  1. Add food into your diet that can help manage pathogens such as parasites and fungus.  Herbs such as Ginger, garlic, fennel, thyme, and oregano all contain anti-parasite and anti-fungal properties.  If you have acid reflux makes sure you’re tested for H.pylori.  H-pylori is a bacterial that is responsible for the majority of the symptoms associated with acid reflux.

Enhance your digestive system with digestive enzymes.  We need enzymes such as lipase, protease, and lactase to facilitate the digestion of fats, protein and sugar.  You can purchase a digestive enzyme supplement from the health food store which can be taken at every meal.  If you want to go the herbal route try Sweetish Bitters. Sweetish Bitters is a time tested herbal remedy which contains the herb gentian root, it is commonly used before and after meals to reduce gas and bloating.

Begin Taking Probiotics (acidophilus).  Acidophilus supplies your body with good bacteria to fight off the bad bacteria.  Numerous studies have shown that daily supplementation with acidophilus will enhance the immune response not just for colds and flu but also for allergies and digestive disorders.  We need good bacteria to digest our food.  Always take acidophilus away from food – trust me.

Garlic: According to some studies, garlic may decrease blood levels of total cholesterol by a few percentage points. Other studies, however, suggest that it may not be as beneficial as once thought. It may also have significant side effects and/or interactions with certain medications. Garlic may prolong bleeding and blood clotting time, so garlic and garlic supplements should not be consumed prior to surgery and should not be taken with blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin (warfarin).

Red Yeast Rice: Red yeast rice has been found to lower cholesterol in studies and was previously found in the over-the-counter supplement Cholestin. However, in 2001, FDA took Cholestin off the shelf because it contained lovastatin, a compound found in the cholesterol prescription medication Mevacor. Reformulated "Cholestin" no longer contains red yeast rice. Other red yeast rice-containing supplements currently available in U.S. contain very small amounts of lovastatin. Their effectiveness is questionable.

Policosanol: Produced from sugar cane, policosanol was found to be effective in lowering LDL cholesterol in several trials. Most policosanol supplements found in the U.S., including the reformulated Cholestin, contain policosanol extracted from beeswax and not the sugar cane policosanol. There is no evidence that policosanol extracted from beeswax can lower cholesterol. Additional studies on sugar cane policosanol are needed to determine its effectiveness in lowering cholesterol.

Vitamin D. The Institute of Medicine suggests that an adequate daily intake of vitamin D is between 200 and 400 international units (IU) for children and adults up to age 70. But increasing vitamin D intake by 1,000 to 5,000 IU a day may be appropriate, depending on a patient's health and genetic risk, Muhlestein says. As expected, patients with severe deficiency were most likely to have been diagnosed with heart disease or stroke, Muhlestein tells WebMD.
