New York Herb School - Institute of Herbal Medicine & Nutrition. The Art of Healing with Herbs & Food.

The New York Herb School - Institute of Herbal Medicine & Nutrition Offers Two Professional Certification Programs. A 6-Month Certification Program in Oriental Dietetics (The Art of Healing with Food) and a 12 - Month Certification Program Classical Chinese Herbology (The Art of Healing with Herbs). You can join the full programs or just take individual classes.

Professor Drew discussing the '5 Tastes of Food'

Our program in Classical Chinese Herbology encourages people from all walks of lifemedical professionals, laypeople, nutritionists, trainers, counselors, massage therapists and more—interested in improving their personal health and the health of their clients.

The Five Element system of Chinese Medicine was developed by ancient sages who gave more attention to restoring the health of the body with herbs and healing foods and less attention to the treatment of disease. Their observations developed into a time-honored tradition of complete health care that has diagnosed, treated and prevented illness for well over 3,000 years.

If you are a health care professional our programs are designed to de-mystify Chinese Herbalism and Oriental Dietetics for the western health care practitioner and give a working knowledge of terminology and protocols that can be successfully applied to complement your health care practice.

Moreover, our training programs were created with an accessible format of classes meeting one weekend a month and includes both academic, online and clinical training in diagnosis, food therapy, and herbal treatment.

The school offers an online pharmacy, private consultations, a student clinic, Support Groups (Wellness Circle), cooking classes, field trips, and an annual health retreat.

Oh Look Honey There Are Egg Whites In The Candy Corn They Must Be Good For You!

I despise candy corn. No reason. They never made me sick.  I do not eat them but the sight of them makes me crazy. I think my level of Dante's Inferno would be stuck in a room with Rush Limbaugh, a big screen TV showing fox news and a bowl of candy corn.

According to the National Confectioners Association, more than 35 million pounds (or nine billion pieces) of candy corn will be produced this year.

Every year the pharmaceutical industry, medical experts and the mainstream media work hard to convince us to get vaccinated against the flu. But we're not being told the whole story. What we don't hear, are cases about the adverse reactions or about the toxic chemicals being injected into us.Read below 11 reasons why flu shots are more dangerous than the flu itself.

WORKSHOP: THE ART of HEALING WITH FOOD - THE ASIAN HEALING DIET

Learn the Art of the Chinese Healing Diet.

Confucius (551-479 B.C.) once said...'the path to your friend's heart and love goes from your cooking.'

A Chinese proverb tells us that 'eating good food can bring harmony and closeness to the family and relationships.'

In 625AD,  the first Chinese Diet Classic was published by Sun Shu Mao a Chinese Physician, his book is entitled 'One Thousand Ounces of Gold Classics'. he created food cures for such conditions as thyroid issues, night blindness, liver diseases and much more. Many of these food cures and healing diets are still being used today. Macrobiotics and many of the modern healing diets that you are familiar with have all drawn from this ancient wisdom to heal disease in the modern clinic.

Tongue Diagnosis in Oriental Medicine

PROFESSOR DREW'S CLASSROOM

This is the first in a series of articles explaining the theories, the herbal formulas and diagnostic tools used in Oriental Medicine to heal. The medical application of tongue diagnosis is very old.  The earliest records are inscriptions on bones and tortoise shells unearthed during the Yi Dynasty; the first dynasty of the Bronze Age. Ancient Chinese physicians developed a special way of approaching the diagnosis of diseases through four types pf physical examination:  inspection, questioning, smelling, and listening.  In addition to taking the pulse, palpation of the abdomen, and tongue diagnosis an inspection of the features of the tongue to aid in disease diagnosis were very important.

Ingredient Details
The Coriolus versicolor or "Turkey Tail" mushroom

The Coriolus versicolor or "Turkey Tail" mushroom has been investigated in numerous laboratory, animal and human clinical studies. Most of these studies have demonstrated that it does appear to have significant antimicrobial, antiviral and antitumor properties when used as a supplement to chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. The anti-cancer and immune stimulating properties of Coriolus versicolor have been attributed to two extracts from its cultured mycelium (thread-like extensions). These extracts are both protein-bound polysaccharides known as polysaccharide K (PSK) and polysaccharide-peptide (PSP). Hot water is required to extract these active components.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)

Known as "The Elixir of Immortality," Reishi mushrooms have long been used in China and Japan. Reishi is classified as one of the "supreme herbs" in the sixteenth century compendium Materia Medica, and was believed to help promote healing and longevity.* Recent studies show that Reishi may help maintain healthy immune, antimicrobial, antiviral and antitumor properties, and protects the nervous and cardiovascular systems.* Reishi has also been shown to support healthy liver function.*

Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis)

Found in pristine high altitude locations in Nepal and China, Cordyceps mushrooms are used in China to promote stamina, endurance and sex drive.* Cordyceps has gained much attention in the West since the early 1990's, when Chinese track athletes shattered world records and revealed that Cordyceps was an important part of their training regimen. Since that time Cordyceps has been embraced by a growing number of endurance athletes worldwide.

Enokitake (Flammulina velutipes)

Enokitake (Flammulina velutipes), commonly known as the “Golden Needle Mushroom” or “Winter Mushroom”, is an edible mushroom that grows on the stumps of the hackberry, mulberry, and persimmon trees.  Due to its crisp texture, Enokitake are used frequently as an ingredient in East Asian cuisines. Extracts from the Enokitake mushroom contains immuno-modulatory protein that can be potentially excelled for immune therapies  and to support cardiovascular health . The Enokitake mushroom extracts contain beta-D-glucan and immuno-modulatory protein (lectin) which helps promote natural antioxidant production , balance immune response , and to promote general liver health .

Astragalus root (Huang qi)

Immunostimulant and antitumor agent that has been shown to increase survival time in patients with adenocarcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and breast cancer.
Immune deficiency conditions such as HIV, CFIDS, and TB
Dry coughs, frequent upper respiratory tract infections, asthma.

Patients suffering from Coxsackie B viral myocarditis with depressed natural killer (NK) activity were treated with Astragulas membranaceus (AM) intramuscularly for 3-4 months. After the treatment, the NK activity was increased significantly from 11.5 +/- 11.9% before therapy to 44.9 +/- 15.0%. Another 6 patients of Coxsackie B viral myocarditis with depressed NK activity were treated with conventional therapy. The NK activity remained unchanged in 12.9 +/- 6%.

Suma Root

With a common name, Para Todo, meaning "for everything," there is a hint of just how much benefit may be to your health. Sometimes refered to as the South American version of ginseng, it has become a popular tonic that is used to boost the immune system and to fight temporary depression and fatigue.
